Technology and Operations
Hi Tom!
I think that most of the Squid attacks were so called creeping attacks
at low speed, constantly listening to the asdic,
and if necessary, turns to port or starboard, immediatly after launching
the depth bombs.
The Squid lancher delivered the depth bombs at a considerably
long distance ahead of the ship,
and the attacks were seldom made at such speed ,
that the A/S vessel not could maneuvre away from the spots of explosions.
In Shrubb&Sainsbury:RN Day by Day,
on page 64 is a very good picture taken from the bridge of the atttacking vessel,
and the Squid bombs are seen exploding in the water,
at least 150 yards ahead of the ship,at what in the picture seems to be safe distance.
On the next page 65 is a very good close up photo of the Squid launcher itself.
Bet regards/Anders.
