Hi Robert,
First a few corrections: Max dia. of pressure hull was 4.7m, length 49.4m. Max. thickness 18.5mm (20.5mm on VIIc/41). Extra thickness to 22mm under conning tower area. Am not aware, that plates were galvanized on either side. In fact I doubt it, because a) extensive paint schedules and number of coats both inside, outside and in tanks - and b) none of the yard photos showing various stages of construction seem to indicate it.
