Robert, you left just as I signed up, Razorback (SS-394), then Permit (SSN-594). With a brownwater experience in between.
To your quiz:
1) How does one load a 288-inch long MK 15-3 torpedo into a 276-inch long torpedo tube?
Very carefully into the stern loading hatch using rigging tackle and after removing obstacles to the fish so it can clear the hatch and trunk, and still level out. Or muzzleloading in port.
Either leaves the muzzle door open, or one could keep the breech door open - closing the muzzle. Then with a full air flask and a good coat of grease - when ready to fire and at or near the surface, open the outer doors, seat the fish (reason for interference fit), and the close breech and fire. Couldn't leak any more than the scope packing - could it?
2) What function/s does the guide stud perform?
Prevents torpedo from rolling in the tube on firing (or before) and provides alignment for depth, speed, and gyro setting spindles.
3) What is the purpose of a torpedo tube bore guage?
To check tube for damage, but mostly for adjusting the height of the rollers in the tube. Source of interference fit? Nah-never mind.
