Hello Keith . I checked several of my books for you on this subject such as : DIE TORPEDOS DER DEUTSCHEN U-BOOTE by EBERHARD ROSSLER and a post war East German navy HANDBUCK FUR TORPEDO-MECHANIKER ( part of the book deals with WWII german torpedos ) . I could agree with everyone here who said that originally the T5 torpedo was unpainted , a brownish grease being the only rust protection . On page 144 of Rossler's book there is a picture of the T5 warhead and it does show some numbers and writing stenciled on it . On page 152 of the same book there is a picture of the U-889 being unloaded , post war of it's T5 torpedo's and they appear to be unpainted natural metal .
Over the years I have seen many torpedos on US Navy bases and they all seem to be heavily painted in various greens and blues etc. , I this this to prevent them from rusting while on display since most were placed on display outside in the elements . And it made them stand out and look more interesting to the eye than look factory new condtition .
If you like I can copy this section of the book for you .
