U-boat Trap

I came across a reference to a U-boat trap during an attack on Convoy ONS-67, 24 Feb 42. During the engagement U-158 received and radio message from U-587 (BORCHERDT) stating ‘BORCHERT warns of U-boat trap with lights and torpedo nets.’ This is the only reference I have and the only U-boat trap I can think of are Q-boats.
I read that during WWI allied destroyers used nets and buoys to force an attacking sub to surface and wondered if tactic was used in WWII, or was it an allied deception campaign to increase U-boat standoff distance.
I’d appreciate any information or research suggestions you could provide.
