My father-in-law, Arnold Spence, was a Control Rating Third Class on HMS Alynbank, from March 1942. He was in the RNVR and this was his first posting after training, apart from bringing a Landing Craft Personnel back to the UK from Brooklyn.
He remembered they had to go to Portsmouth to have the unexploded bomb removed, which I think he said was on their return from PQ 18.
He went with the Alynbank to a rendezvous off Dakar with the Queen Mary, then carrying troops. He left the ship shortly after this and was posted first to Officer training at Brighton, and then to Troon, where under the command of Lord Louis Mountbatten, he trained on a Landing Craft Tank (Rocket).
Arnold Spence died on 20th November 2014
