I'm getting too old - or is it always the last dive + a new idea.
How about a helmsman, a current, or wind, setting the ship to one side of their straight course? Or enough cable to let the mine ride back.
But it must have been a torpedo because in another totally irrelevant case the record showed it was a torpedo not a mine.
The best part was the inward bent plates (with undamaged frames) that hadn't rusted away like the rest of the hull.
But then the girls were warm!
