Come on now, America was just waiting for Melanie to make her first dive in a dry suit!
The show missed a key thing about the mines: the importance of a ship's bow wave. When you combine the bow wave with a teathered mine and you do, in fact, get mine hits midship or aft.
U 156 was too slow to chase a cruiser — her top speed was only 12.4 knots on the surface. I'd need to due a bit more research on the events of July 19 and 21, 1918 (i.e get exact times of day), but my sense is that it's pushing it for U 156 to get from the New City area to off Cape Cod in two days at her typical cruising speed.
