I am researching Walter Rohr's (U-84) attack on the Q-ship 'Bergamot' on the 17th August, 1917. I have found out that Bergamot was operating with the British sub E-48 at the time of her sinking.
Keble Chatterton says of the Anchusa class sloops that their sterns were not quite right for a merchantman, and would not fool a top notch u-boat captain, and, of course, Walter Rohr had already been badly scared by a Q-ship when the Penshurst, under Commander Grenfell, had punctured the pressure hull twice with 12pdr shells. Apparently the U-84 only escaped by using the french tricolour of the captured french sailing ship Bayonne to plug the holes!
So, any info would be most gratefully received.
Regards,
Richard
