<HTML>Just dug out RAdm Gallery's book. It was towed up the St. Lawrence and through the Welland Canal into Lake Erie, then on to Chicago. For what it's worth, the first ship locked through the (fourth incarnation of the) canal in 1932 was 633 feet long, so presumably a u-boat wouldn't have had that much trouble getting through. The primary thrust of Seaway development wasn't so much longer locks as making the channels deeper to accomodate ocean-going vessels.
