Kemp\'s \"U-boats Destroyed\" and tarrent\'s \"U-Boat Offensive 1914-45\" both list the loss as being to a mine at an unknown location in the Dover area. However, Conway\'s \"All the World\'s fighting Ship 1906-1922\" and Ron Humphrey\'s \"The Dover patrol 1914-18\" list U 109 as being lost to gunfire from the drifter Beryl III on January 26, 1918. The description in \"Dover patrol\" of the incident ends with \"When divers went down later to investigate the wreck, U 109 was identified.\"
So if te bell is legitimate (BIG IF), then it could have come from this wreck. Of course, this would involve taking items from a war grave...</HTML>
