<HTML>Hello Marc & others

In the U-boat Ops of WWII by K.Wynn, it states U-97\'s fate.
On the 16th June 1943, U-97 was caught on the surface N of Tobrok
by a RAAF Hudson bomber of 459 Sqn piloted by F/Sgt D Barnard.
He (pilot) dropped his depth-charges from approx 50 feet and some
the U-boat\'s crew dived overboard. The aircraft was hit by the blast,
causing momentary loss of control. U-97\'s bow rose out of the sea
and the boat than sank by her stern first. 21 survivors were later
picked up by the Royal Navy and another 26 of her crew including
her Captain were lost with U-97.
The aircraft (*Hudson bomber) was so badly damaged in action but
the pilot did managed to reach his base at Gambut and landed safely.
F/Sgt Barnard was award an immediate DFM.

Cheers, Joe Brennnan
