<HTML>Hi Steve,
A type IX can not properly maneuver submerged in 30\' to 40\' of water. laying on the bottom a tincan could ground on her conning tower. Prudent submariners dont like shallow water.
It was previously reported here and folklore has it she was actually sighted in the river. This does not prevent them from making a dash into the shallows at night to investigate a possible target.
I know of case when a IXC chased a steamer ashore off south America, grounding it, but did not get close enough to finish it off with the deckgun, because the sub itself had less than 7\' of water under the keel and it was on the surface. So, they broke off the pursuit and got out before the Air Patrol arrived. Sure enough, no sooner did they reach diving depth, they had to crashdive because of air alarm.
