<HTML>I would also add this snippet of information taken from Hitler\'s U-Boat War, Vol.1,
by Clay Blair, Random House/Modern Library, 1996/2000:
\"Kuhlmann (captain of U-166) reported planting...nine mines on...July 24-25 at the mouth of the Mississippi River, about 650 yards off the jetty heads...None of the mines ever detonated. On July 30, Kuhlmann sank by torpedo...the 5,000 ton American cargo-passenger vessel Robert E. Lee...enroute from Trinidad to New Orleans. Although the ship sank in fifteen minutes, only 17 of 407 persons perished. Escorts PC-566 and SC-519 and a tugboat rescued the other 390 from 22 lifeboats and rafts....At 1:40pm on August 1, (Coast guard seaplane) pilot Henry C. White, flying at 1500 feet, saw a U-boat on the surface. White dived...and at 250 feet dropped his single Mark XVII depth charge...His radioman, George H. Boggs, Jr. reported what appeared to be a direct hit on the starboard side. The Gulf Sea Frontier credited White with \"probable damage\" to a U-boat, but in fact, White had sunk U-166...it was the only U-boat sunk by Coast Guard aircraft in the war. For this feat, White was belatedly awarded the Distinguised Flying Cross.\"
The narrative states that the sub was sunk in \"120 feet of water\"--obviously grossly inaccurate in light of today\'s information.
