The discovery was made using C & C Technologies HUGIN 3000 AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vessel) while we were conducting a pipeline survey for British Petroleum (BP) and Shell International. After Dan Warren and I identified from the sonar imagery what we felt may be the U-boat, BP and Shell were notified. The two oil companies then made the decision to positively identify and document both the U-boat and Robert E. Lee through further survey investigations (with the AUV) and ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle). These measures were well beyond the regulatory requirements and my hat goes off to them. They did a great job.
This find will rewrite much of the history of the U-166. The proximity of the U-boat to its last victim substantiates the theory that U-166 was sunk by PC-566 (Naval Escort) on July 30, 1942 within minutes of the U-boat’s attack of the Robert E. Lee. Our research indicates that on August 1, 1942, the U.S. Coast Guard aviators, Henry White and George Boggs, most likely depth charged U-171. There is evidence to support this in the K.T.B.
I have not seen all the press coverage, but the most accurate I have seen so far has been from the Associated Press (which was carried by Yahoo and others), They did a good job of covering the story.
