Human remains & other possible U-boat discover

<HTML>Regarding the possiblity of finding human remains on U-166, I believe that it is possible. However, it may be that any hard remains (bones) have disappeared through natural processes. If the carbonate compensation depth is shallow in the Gulf, none will remain. The CCD describes the water conditions at great depths where they are undersaturated with calcium, such that the rate of solution of calcium carbonate exceeds the rate of its deposition. Thus over time, any solid CaCO3 source is disolved by these waters. In the Pacific, the CCD is between 4000-5000 metres depth, and shallower in the Atlantic. Regardless, the great depths of the Bismarck and Titanic assured that the bones were long dissolved away.
U-166 is located in about 1500 metres water depth. The odds suggest that bones might still be present, though the water chemistry might be more complex given the influence of the Mississippi and so the CCD may be shallower.
On a related note, readers might want to see how the petroleum industry has reported U-166 discovery:

Finally, it is quite probable that petroleum exploration here offshore Nova Scotia will soon reveal the final resting places of U-754 (~90 metres WD), and especially U-866 (100-300 metres WD) which is in the centre of an active exploration license.
Cheers,
