<HTML>Dear Adrian,
I agree with your comments about U 862, in Tasman sea, off News South wales coast of Australia. But I dont know that she sailed around New Zealand island before returned back to Java. So, in that case, she was in south pacific .
As for merchant shipping, it\'s a great lane beetween Australia and Asia, but in Tasman sea ,Coreal sea and east Indian ocean. In south Pacific, from Australia to Fidji, Tonga and French Polynesia, there was a low shipping mail. The american had their one from Hawaï and Bora.Bora. A big one, because Bora was an important base of material against eventual japone attacks. And the arrival of the french fregate to Wallis and Futuna just before the english ones, to take this islands to de Gaulle Forces.
So a bit, but a little one, of war in this part of world.

It\'s not the same in WWI with the two german cruisers that attacked New Guinea and different islands in south Pacific, even Papeete, to find coal for their propulsion.</HTML>
