It was Kretschmer with U 23 who sent the signal \"Felsen torpediert aber nicht versenkt\" when he fired two torpedoes into the Fell Sund in the Shetlands, because a shadow of a rock looked like a cruiser. He was so amused about the incident that he sent the signal to Dönitz. (The \"Lion\" was known for his humor)
Someone made an error in typing and Dönitz only got \"Nelsen torpediert aber nicht versenkt\". After Kretschmer returned from the patrol, Dönitz asked him about the signal and both laughted out loud.
Dönitz told Kretschmer that Goebbels would not be amused about this incident and he had to call him immediately because the propaganda department was going to publish the sinking of the battleship HMS Nelson.
