Who would WANT to build one?

<HTML>I would figure that any U-boat raised and refitted would be totalled.
Given that most U-boats would be sunk because of war service or target practice the damage would be expensive to repair. Also the Atlantic would have corroded the hull to a point where you would have no choice but to replace the hull.
I see that some of you would like to see a replica made for some purpose. How would that work? Suppose some of us on this site were able to put up the money for a replica? How much do you think that would be? You would have to pay for steel and find people to shape it. You would need to find engines and batteries for propulsion(you could fudge on the batteries, replace them with something with more endurence). Then we could try to bring Erich Topp out of retirement to show us how to work the U-boat(provided he doesn\'t shoo us away first). Give a sonar signature to the navies of the world so they don\'t torpedo us accidentially. For a crew, we could have representatives from each country that visit this site. Well, maybe not. How about this. I\'ll take the U-boat on Saturdays. Klaus Rittenour can have it on Sundays. John Griffiths can have it on Mondays. Chris Lee could have it on Tuesdays. Jack can have it on Wednesdays. Yves can have it Thursdays. And for bring us this great web site, I think Gudmundur should get it Fridays. :-)
Don\'t I have a vivid imagination?
