<HTML>A reference was made in \"Silent Hunters\" to older skippers being assigned to the type IX boats precisely because of their age. The older skippers, it was reasoned, would have the patience needed to search a larger target area (possibly with little or no enemy contact), for longer durations, have the discipline necessary to attack alone, and the retrospect to handle a larger crew for longer periods. Because the type IX boats were bigger and slower, the older commander would have the patience, combined with prudence, to choose his attacks more carefully than a younger man.</HTML>
