RE: Did Doenitz use his older skippers for the IXD

I found a reference about this in a book by Geoffrey Jones called Defeat of the U-Boats where he states that the appointment of senior officers such as Rollmann(U848),Shultze (U849) Ewerth(u850) , Weingaertner(u851) Hartmann (u-198) etc was that they would have the seniority and diplomacy that would be required to deal with the Japanese forces at the East Asian Bases where they were planned to operate.
Another reason I believe that could have influenced their appointment to these boats was their experience from early in the war attacking individual routed shipping they were expected to encounter. They also may have been percieved to have had the necessary qualities required to handle their crews during such long patrols. Luth gives a good example of the need for this ability following his patrols on the u-181. Of course the loss of such senior officers would have been a hard blow to the U-boat force.
