In my opinion K/59 never actually reached the area where U-383 had been attacked. Sunderland 228/V reported the attack position as 47.24N/12.10W, but I have some doubts about the accuracy of this position. The western border of the Musketry patrol area was 11.21W, so the aircraft was outside of the area where it was supposed to be? Furthermore U-383 reported being attacked in grid BF4453 which is approx. 47.03N/10.35W. This is confirmed by U-218 that had sailed with U-383 and reported crash diving for an aircraft at 1955 in BF4452 and then heard distant bomb explosions at 2005 and 2020.

The answer for your other question is that the U-boats had orders to fight it out with the Allied anti-submarine aircraft operating over the Bay of Biscay. This tactics did not work, even with the stronger AA armament and sailing in groups for mutual protection, the U-boat sustained high losses during July 1943 and this policy was finally stopped after four of the eight outbound U-boats were sunk on 1/2 August 1943.

You are welcome. I enjoy doing this type of research from primary sources. Sometimes one uncovers new information that makes it necessary to rewrite earlier views of certain actions or events, but in other cases one has also to accept that some details will remain hidden in the "fog of war".
