Raising and scapping

<HTML>Why were so many u boats raised and then scapped after the war, and even into the fifties? Was the scrap value of the boat enough to justify the hefty price tag of salvaging it from the depths. It strikes me that if it was not a navigational hazard just leave it be. What am I missing? Regards to all. me109g</HTML>
