<HTML>Hi Jorge,
You may be able to find U-34’s KTB (war diary/logbook) at the National Archives here in the U.S.
Web site: [www.nara.gov].
E-mail: inquire@arch2.nara.gov (for documents and information). They reply by snail mail so be sure and include your postal address. They usually reply within 10 working days. For KTBs send them an e-mail asking for information on how to purchase a KTB on microfilm and identify the U-boat you are interested in. They will reply in writing with the cost ($34.00 inside the U.S. & $39.00 outside the U.S.) and the forms to fill out. The microfilm roll number will already be on the form so you just add the shipping instructions and payment & send the forms back. They don’t have all KTBs but they do have most of them.
From outside the U.S. you might need to write them instead at:
National Archives
Textual Reference Branch
8601 Adelphi Road
College Park MD 20740-6001
You should probably include an envelope with your address and the necessary postage along with your request.
You can try to e-mail them first to see if they will reply to your e-mail. Perhaps someone who has dealt with them from outside the U.S. can say if they will reply outside the U.S. without the postage being supplied. Archives outside the U.S. have replied to me by mail without my having to send the postage first, so the National Archives should do the same.
Also note that KTBs come on a roll of microfilm, not in printed form. You will have to find a viewer that can handle the microfilm. I found one here at the local library (main branch). There are also usually KTBs from a few other U-boats on the same roll.
Of course the KTBs are in German and just knowing the German language is not enough to translate them correctly. The translator needs to be familiar with U-boat terminology and abbreviations.
Regards,
Ken Dunn
