Wuestion,
Just wanted to add little bit more to your question. The source is from Wolf Pack by Gordon Williamson. On page 167 Mr Williamson quotes "The leave system for U-boat men was also highly advantageous. After a patrol the boat would be laid up in port for refit, repairs and cleaning. No more than half, but sometimes only a small skeleton crew, would be left on board while the remainder were given 12 days' home leave".

Mr Williamson is also quoted on page 109 in the same book "that the crew that remained beyond made the most of their off-duty time and lost no opportunity to paint the town red. Some very fine hotels, even small chateaux were taken over as accommodation for the U-boat crews in French ports. Local cinemas showed German films and theaters put on German plays.U-boat crews were also provided with superior rations at this time".
