Wuestion about damaged u boats returning to port

Hi everyone, i have a question. Please forgive me if this seems like a silly question.
Lets say a U boat returned to port damaged and upon inspection it was discovered that it was going to take a month or more to repair. Would that crew be transferred to another U boat OR would they stay in port and help with the repairs?
