<HTML>I met the IWO of U-1228 one morning at the Archiv. Guenter Schueller, LtzS. He was going thru some books there. I asked if he had been a U-boat Fahrer, and he said yes, but he looked a little uneasy and uncertain (probably telling from my German accent I was American). When I asked him to sign my U-boat Commanders book for me, he then looked very happy and proud, and told me a little story about his boat sinking a corvette off Newfoundland late in the war.
I said, \"Prima! Prima!\" And Herr Schueller smiled broadly.
Then I thought to myself, well, gosh, I should feel sad an Allied ship was sunk...but I was caught up in his story and how they had been at sea many weeks without spotting any targets. When they finally found one and scored a sinking, I couldn\'t help myself but to be happy for their success! I wasn\'t thinking about Axis or Allies.
Here was a nice man, who had simply done his job, and done it honorably, and he had every reason to feel proud, I felt.
(I can also add, Herr Bredow is still quite angry these days over the treatment of Grand Admiral Doenitz after he passed away---no military funeral with honors...although some former U-boat men were afforded just such an honor.)
best,
