Allways have in mind the U-Boat, the crew and the conditions, so you\'ll have a metal ciggar with two toilettes, one out of use \'cause usually it was used for stowing provisions, so one left for 45-50 people on board, no time to waste in there shaving your self or having a hot bath, sorry, no bathtubs, only sea water, if the conditions were right and you are not sailing in North Atlantic, you are on watch, four hours on, four off, no time for a shower, hardly any time for sleep, hardly any space to move and these \"damn\" destroyers constantly after you, no central heating usually \'cause the batteries are needed for more vital instruments, such as e-motors, dive planes etc, every day one torpedo must be remmoved from the tube and added with a fresh coat of greace, lots of sweating, engine room, dirt, oil, grease, sweating, leather clothes, no facilities to wash them, natural body oils etc, moisture everywhere, even bread turns into \"kanninchen\", green and faul, day by day, week by week, in some cases month by month, watch on, watch off...
I hope this helps to give you an idea how it was, or at least I think it was from what I\'ve read or seen in documentaries and of course in \"Das Boot\".
