<HTML>In U.S. Navy talk, the \"F\" is for fighter, the \"4\" I cannot recall at this particular time and the 3rd letter stands for whatever corporation happened to manufacture the plane in question. For instance, F was the code for Grumman, U is for Vought, I think , but I might be wrong, M is for General Motors. General Motors made a majority of the Avengers, hence the T.B.M. Avenger. Brewster Corporation and Goodyear made some Corsairs although I cannot recall what their 3rd letter code is at this time.
