What's more, at that point he's talking to the enemy, not to the other person on the bridge. So why not use two words that even people that never formally learned English know? Besides, Der Alte does know the language, havinf sailed the sees for a long time, and so does his XO, having lived abroad for a long time.
If one is worried about how realistically common this half-of-a-sentence is, what about the Tipperary song? (For clarity: I'm personally not worried about that at all either.)
