U-185 sinking. This well known and poignant picture was taken by Lt. Neely's radio operator as his TBF flew over the doomed U-boat in a foiled attempt to bomb her after LCDR Brewer's strafing run. Already awash, the conning tower shows clearly the black dots housing the dipole arrays of the FuMo 29 GEMA radar set. The heavy list is obvious and the stern has already totally disappeared under the waves, but the dense black smoke from the burning left diesel is still pouring out of the stricken boat. The partially submerged dark ridge ahead of the conning tower is the fallen 10.5cm gun lying transversally on the canting deck. At least one crew member is on board and alive, on the starboard side of the "Wintergarten", gripping the railing of the aft platform 20mm gun.
In at least one book this image is reported to be of the sinking of the U-200.
