Peter Matthes was killed when his boat, U-326, was sunk on 25 April, 1945 in the Bay of Biscay west of Brest in position 48.12N, 05.42W by a homing torpedo from an American Liberator aircraft (VPB-103/K). 43 dead, all hands lost (Niestlé, 1998).
