Net Cutters

I guys,

I was wondering when net cutters were removed fro Type VIIb's during the war? The book I have by Gordon Williamson (I believe it was called Kriegsmarine U-boats), stated that most U-boat had their cutters removed prior to the start of the war. Yet, I keep on seeing them on wartime photos. It seems that most Type VIIbs had them on (like the U-47), does anyone know when they were removed?
