pre-WWII U-boat grey colour

Can anybody advise me what shade of grey was used on the upper hull and conning towers of pre-war U-boats during 1938 and 1939? It seems to be darker than the hellgrau RAL7001 used during the war. An FS code or an RAL code would be ideal.
