Wood Decking on Type VIIb

Hi. Can someone tell me if the wooden decking on the Type VIIb U-boat was painted the same gray color as the hull, or was it left unpainted? I'm specifically interested in how the decking would have appeared on U-48. Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.
