Which model kit company to choose?

Greetings,
There are many model kit makers I've never heard of:
Mirage
Nichimo (sp?)
Trumpeter (?)
Hasegawa (sp?)
and some that were very bad when I was a child:
Monogram
Revell
That are supposed to be good these days...
I'd like to build a Type XII boat, the 1/400 looks a tad small and lacking in details, what else could I find?
