Kretschmer was indeed wearing a British battledress uniform, as was his whole crew. A storehouse of British uniforms was captured after Dunkirk. The Germans found that they were made of a better quality denim than what the Kriegsmarine issued, so they helped themselves. They were allowed to wear them, provided they changed the insignia.
