What was the actual color of German U-Boot ?

Hi everybody !
I meet a (serious ) problem with a narrow-minded friend. He strongly maintains that all the hull of German U-Boot were painted in green. He throw a blame to anyone paints it in dark grey or worst ! in red.
On the few old pictures I 've seen, I noticed that the down of the hull is indeed darker than the up. But I found no color pictures ...except the ones of the U-Boot which are exposed.The problem is that these ones have been repainted. So, are there any real evidences to know the real colors of these submarine ?
