paint scheme of U-47

I have one of Amati\'s beautiful U-47 kits. I don\'t trust the painting instructions in the kit, since they show the boat in a light gray over hull red. Yet in pictures published of the U-47 after Scappa Flow she\'s either medium gray or dark gray in color in the black and white photo\'s. Has anyone done any research on this. Thanks for the help.
