1942 U-boat Torpedoes

Hello,

My name is Frank and I am researching for a documentary on the Battle of the Atlantic. It is a four hour special that will be aired in the UK, US, and Canada. We are searching for technical information about the torpedoes used in early 1942, which I believe are the G7e/T3, though am not 100% about that. Any information about these would be great. For example, some of the questions we need to know are :

1) How they stayed on course and hit their target (gyroscopes, depth control, etc.)?

2) How they were propelled through the water?

3) What happened when they made contact with a target?, I know they usually exploded, but I am looking for how they did so, what kind of detonation device, fuse, and explosive material were used?

As this is TV, we are looking for some comprehensible technical specs.

Once again, any help would be terrific.

Many thanks for your time.

Frank
