Type VIIC/41 Attachment to Top Front Hull

Hi,
I’ve seen rectangular additions, one to each side of the front hull the top of which is even with the deck line and above the front, and partially to the front of, the saddle tank on VIIC/41 boats. Questions: 1) what are these two rectangular extensions, and (2)what were they for, and (3) were they later attached to early 1940’s Type VIIC’s (NOT just VIIC/41’s) boats that continued to operate until the end of WWII?
