depth charge clicks

US submariners, in the Pacific, often commented that depth charges made a clearly audible clicking sound just before the main explosion - \'click - WHAM\', \'click - WHAM\'
Many different authors have mentioned it. And no one seems to know what it was - though they generally assumed it to be the detonator.
But I haven\'t heard of this in any German accounts of being depth charged.
