This question is regarding the capstan and/or windlass arrangement on the bow deck of a type VII-C. Many pictures illustrate a round flat plate with holes in the deck, where on plans it is marked to be a capstan. Other photos show a capstan above deck in the same place.....

My question - is the flat plate a cover for a \"pop up\" capstan, a mounting bracket, or something else. Please explain.
