Paulette,
There is NO standard size for any boat past or present. Each boat is built to the same specs but a little different for each boat. This holds true today as it did in the past.

The principle characteristics of the Type 9C40 submarine are given in Naval Technical Mission in Europe Report 312-45, and are summarized as follows: L.O.A. - 251'10", Max Beam - 22'6", Draft Normal Diving Trim - 14'2", Draft Emergency Diving Trim - 15'4", Max Dia. of Pressure Hull 14'7", Displacement - Surface - Normal - 999 cu. meter, Designer's Depth 100 meter.

I hope this will help in some small way.

Scott
