Atlas-Werke Signalling device (?) Type VII a 1942

I wonder if someone might be familiar with the Unterwasserschall-Signal-Verkeshrs-Anlagen, of the Atlasd-Werke (Bremen). The document I have here is entitled "An 501/Sonore UT-Anlage fuer U-Boote", 1942. It is 20pp long with 18 folding plates, some of which are large folding schematics. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at. IS it a fathometer, or something related? It was constructed for the Type VII-a u-boat, if that is of assistance.
