Hello Titanius,
The Book "Another Place, Another Time" by Werner Hirschmann - page 216..
Basically the modification to the forward upper deck was an attempt to reduce the diving time of U-190 a Type IXC/40 which was about 40 - 45 seconds to complete. I believe the modification only decreased the diving time by a few seconds. For example; The Type VII C which was a much smaller U-Boat had a diving time of around 25 - 30 seconds which greatly increased the survivability of the U-Boat.
