Randall and Boot magnetron

I read that this Magnetron was invented 1940 and that their smallest version picked up a submerged U-Boat periscope or snorkel at the range of seven miles away. Is this true? if it is then it must have been pretty pointless to use a U-Boat after 1940 since it must have been pretty easy to detect.
