fuel oil consumed

Hello:
In single hull submarines, there were some fuel oil tanks inside the presure hull. For instance, type VII U-Boats had two large fuel oil tanks named Treibölbunker 1i and 2i. I believe those tanks were not self compensating. Therefore, after consuming all their fuel oil, they would be empty, wouldn´t they?. My question is: after comsuming the fuel, how was compensated its weight?. The submarine would be lighter. I think it´s needed to add weight to the boat. What tank was flooded ?.
Thanks in advance.
