Type XXI - Whisky/Foxtrot

On a recent visit to the Russian Foxtrot U475 submarine in Folkestone harbour I notice that the ribs were outside the pressure hull. Not being technically minded I dont know if this is a good idea or not but I always understood that a lot of the German U-boat designs had the ribs inside the pressure hull.
Any help/information would be appreciated.
