SPHINX was a 'Halcyon' class minesweeper, one of the third group of that class to be built.
Tech: 815/1330 tons 245' 2" x 33'6"
2 shafts/geared turbines/1750 shp = 17 knots
armed: 2 x 4", 4 x 0.5" machine guns
complement: 80
Built by Hamiltons at Port Glasgow; ordered in August 1937 and launched on 7 February 1939.
Completed in July 1939 she joined the 6th Minesweeping Flotilla shifting to the 5th Minesweeping Flotilla in September 1939.

On 3rd February 1940, under the command of Cdr John Robert Newton Taylor, she was sweeping an area 15 miles miles north of Kinnairds Head when attacked by enemy aircraft. A bomb pierced the fo'c'sle deck and exploding destroying the fore part of the ship. She remained afloat and was taken in tow by the 'Halcyon' but steadily flooded and capsized and sank. The wreck was later washed ashore north of Lybster and was sold for scrap. The CO and forty of the men were killed in the explosion.</HTML>
